Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a non-surgical procedure that eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day. With Ortho-K, you wear specially designed contact lenses at night while sleeping.
These lenses gently change the shape of your cornea (the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of your eye) so that you can see clearly, with your natural vision, during the day. It is an alternative to LASIK for those who don’t want surgery.
What is involved?
Your optometrist will perform a complete eye examination first, and will determine if you are a suitable candidate for Ortho-K.
Your optometrist will then take a series of measurements, and will analyse these measurements to determine the best Ortho-K contact lenses for your eyes. You will also have a "practice lens" placed on your eye to experience how it feels. Your Ortho-K contact lenses will then be ordered and custom-made, which usually takes 2-3 weeks.
An appointment will then be made to explain how to care for and use your lenses, and assess how they fit on your eyes. Your optometrist will see you for a follow-up appointment the morning after the first night you wear your lenses. They will then review your progress at one week, one fortnight, one month, three months, six months, twelve months, 18 months, and two years.
